诗人大学Chancellor =)

Poet Lemn Sissay was officially installed as Chancellor of The University of Manchester on 14 Oct 2015。诗人说话总是有诗的味道。

大学选一位诗人做Chancellor，太令人惊喜。

会吟诗的Chancellor，太诗意了，酷！

诗人Lemn Sissay对于Manchester不是一个陌生的名字。他的诗出现在Manchester的不同角落。

"Rain"是Lemn Sissay的一个经典。就在靠近我大学宿舍Whitworth Park的一个墙壁上, 很正能量！

大学毕业典礼！

对我来说，大学毕业是很愉快的事。穿上毕业袍，有飘飘然的感觉。
7月7日，我终于以Graduand的身份坐在庄严的Whitworth Hall，出席The University of Manchester 毕业典礼。（我想我一定会一直记住这日期吧，毕竟7月8日是我生日，哈哈）

仪式还没开始

音乐响起，仪式开始，讲师教授们正式入场：

Prof Thakker (大学的Associate Vice President )负责preside这个仪式。仪式开始时，他邀约在场的毕业生用掌声来感谢毕业生的家人。他之后说了很多关于大学在research, teaching和social responsibility的成就。这些都和校训“Cognitio, Sapientia, Humanitas” (Knowledge, Wisdom, Humanity的拉丁文）相辅相应。其中包括了2010年Nobel Prize in Physics和volunteering contribution。

毕业生和大学是一辈子的感情，印象最深刻是他的这一句：

“This will always be your university.”

之后是Head of School Prof Marshall负责演讲。她说了很多Manchester Pharmacy School在Pharmaceutical Sciences和Pharmacy Practice的research贡献。她也说了学校在QS Pharmacy Subject ranking的杰出表现和teaching excellence (尤其是clinical education)以及 technological innovations。

Prof Marshall勉励毕业生说道：

“You may entering the pharmaceutical world in a time of great change, 

but always remember that change brings opportunities for those who can rise to the challenge, 

and you should be confident that your Manchester education has equipped you well. 

As you take the next step in your career, 

I urged you to keep up-to-date your practice and science, keep investing in yourself.”

Dr Hall负责present graduands from Manchester Pharmacy School。大家当时都有些紧张吧，怕他念错名，也怕上台领奖时不小心跌倒。（哈哈，毕竟这将是一辈子的回忆，一切都被现场video recorded和网上live telecast）。虽然事先我已经告诉自己不要太急，但上台领奖时我还是走得很快，哈哈。

之后是Pharmacy毕业生的affirmation仪式：

“I affirm that I will:

• make the care of my patients my first concern;

• treat every patient politely and considerately;

• respect patients' dignity and privacy;

• listen to patients and respect their views;

• give patients information in a way they can understand;

• respect the right of patients to be fully involved in decisions about their care;

• keep my professional knowledge and skills up to date;

• recognise the limits of my professional competence;

• be honest and trustworthy;

• respect and protect confidential information;

• make sure my personal beliefs do not prejudice my patients' care;

• act quickly to protect my patients from risk if I have good reason to believe that I or a colleague may

not be fit to practise;

• avoid abuse of my position as a pharmacist;

• work with colleagues in the ways that best serve patients' interests.

In all these matters I will never discriminate unfairly against my

patients or colleagues. I will always be prepared to justify my actions to them.

I so affirm".

仪式最后，Prof Thakker要求毕业生戴上四方帽，象征着Graduands正式成为Graduates。他也邀约毕业生用掌声感谢帮助学生走到这里的讲师和教授。

大学情结

说也奇怪，我对自己的大学一直有特别的情怀。这种感觉是我之前从没有的，之前读小学，中学，或A-level都没有这种情感。我知道我爱曼彻斯特大学。这样的坦白也许应该留到明年毕业才写，但我还是忍不住写了，溢出的情感无法收回。

是不是每个人都会对自己的大学，产生出感情？

小时候，学过“Alma mater”这个idiom, 当时一直以为我的alma mater(母校）是平民华小。后来，长大后，才发现其实alma mater是用来形容大学 (你可以查任何人的wikipedia profile看看。）所以，我的alma mater是The University of Manchester。

曾经听人说过，毕业后，如果遇到和自己来自同样大学的人，会有如遇到同乡的亲切感。那句话的真实性或许因人而异，但至少我会觉得亲切，或许可以闲聊谈论建筑物环境，谈论天气，谈论讲师学生，或甚至讨论食物。

喜欢大学的MPharm Hoodie。Hoodie前面左上角有大学的crest, 背面则写着“Indispensable since 1883”。欣赏'Indispensable'这个用词的设计，因为语带双关。第一，药师是负责dispense药，没有药师，就无法dispense药。第二，Indispensable意思是指不可或缺。1883年是大学Pharmacy department开办的一年。每次说关于大学的历史总是觉得莫名的兴奋，毕竟大学是英国第一间颁发Pharmacy Degree的大学。

"Rx"是个常见的标志，代表着prescription。Rx源自Latin文Recipe, 带有"To take... "/ “请服用”的意思。药的正确服用是药师很注重的事情，因为“the best medicine is of no use if it is not taken correctly”。

曾经读过有朋友自嘲他对他大学的情感是种Stockholm syndrome。觉得那是很幽默的形容，因为Stockholm syndrome是指被害者对加害者产生出情感，尤其用在被绑架的人对绑匪产生出感情。换句话说，大学让他吃尽“苦头”，但他却乐此不疲, haha =)

我觉得这几年大学生活让我获益良多，希望可以再接再厉，学更多，体验更多，更值得纪念。期许每个人都有很棒的大学生活！

唱歌有很多不同名字的选秀比赛，科学界呢？

最近，刚刚落幕的欧洲 Future Emerging Technology (FET) Flagships programme就像一个科学界的选秀大赛，胜出的两个flagship project有机会各自获得10亿欧元的10年投资。该比赛主要是为了要让欧洲继续在科学超越其他国家。European Commision愿意投资巨本，因为曾经尝过甜果：之前重本投资的CERN让欧洲一直在particle accelerator research遥遥领先。

没错，Research是必要的，现在的research就是为了赢得更好的未来，没有research就没有更好的未来。我很喜欢FET Flagships的motto，也就是“science beyond fiction”。经过近2年的试验“选秀”，胜利者出炉了。

Graphene Flagship和Human Brain Project Flagship分别赢得10亿欧元的10年投资。

Graphene, 这个supermaterial得到的注意力是前所未有的。2004年在University Manchester被discover, 短短6年内graphene让Prof Andre Geim和Prof Konstantin Novoselov获得2010年的Nobel Prize in Physics。最近英国政府决定投资超过5千万英镑在University Manchester成立National Graphene Institute, 再加上这个10亿欧元的FET flagship重大投资，graphene在未来是前途无量的。graphene有潜力被用在在telecommunication （超快网速）, transistor （超快电脑） , bendable mobile phone, batteries (电子车）甚至是water purification（净化海水）, photovoltaic cell （未来的能源）, nano particle drug delivery等等。Graphene FET flagship目前的chairman是Prof Sir Andre Geim，但是research不是讲究个人英雄主义，这个flagship目前在17个欧洲国家有超过170个research group。

Human Brain Project Flagship的目标是要用电脑模拟人脑。这个research如果成功，即将带来革命性的进步，双方面的突破：我们可以治疗很多脑的疾病，我们的电脑也能像大脑一样复杂强大。 目前University Manchester的Prof Steve Furber领导的SpiNNaker Project初步证明这个Human Brain project是可行的，绝对不是痴人说梦话。这个flagship目前在欧洲23个国家有87个research group。

题外话：
有远见的新加坡很早在2010年就成立graphene research center,目前是亚洲领先的graphene研究中心。这种sustainable development的远见才是一个国家应该有的。相反的，我最爱的国家很大可能成了全世界最大的稀土废料中心，破坏环境，还超过10年的免税，内心是极度心疼的。

不一样的大学第二年，很开心自己有新的体验, 超过60个小时的volunteering。

也拿到一个文件夹当作portfolio
